Preston Jazz & Improvisation Festival 2022

Preston Jazz & Improvisation Festival is back with full force this May 2022. Between Saturday 14 May and Saturday 28 May, jazz and improvisation fans can enjoy two weeks of music, workshops, and conferences. This annual festival of music and culture will be welcoming back the ever-popular Jazzin' the Park event on Winckley Square, wrapping up the festival in style on Saturday 28 May.

All events are free to attend and take place in ventilated venues. It is recommended you take a lateral flow test before attending and stay home if you have Covid-19 or symptoms.

ALTR: Summer Dance - Saturday 14 May

  • Time: 2pm - 11pm
  • Location: Ships and Giggles

One of the most exciting new record labels and club nights to come out of the North West present the freshest DJ talent and the best house, minimal, and disco. The line-up includes Vales, DV8, Arte, Danza, and more.

Garage 101: Zed Bias Production Masterclass and DJ Set (Feat. Chunky) - Sunday 15 May

  • Time: 7pm - 11pm
  • Location: The Continental

British music pioneer, Zed Bias, will be DJ-ing at The Continental, bringing special guest, MC, DJ, and Producer Chunky. Zed Bias is one of the UK's most respected and influential DJs and producers.

Preston Music Histories - Tuesday 17 May

  • Time: 4pm - 10pm
  • Location: Sound Skills

A premiere showing of a short film about Preston Music Histories, followed by an after party. 

A Day of Music and Culture - Wednesday 18 May

  • Time: 4pm - 10pm
  • Location: The Continental

The first part of this event takes place online (4pm - 6pm), available to stream. This will be a brand-new documentary series that introduces listeners to a range of new and emerging music genres from across the globe. This is an opportunity to check out the first in the new series which looks at Amapiano - an emerging dance music scene with its origins in South Africa.

6pm - 10pm will take place at the Continental and feature:

  • Part 2: Last days by Kimahxox is an online installation that suggests we be hopeful in difficult times, encouraging us to live in, and make the most of, our present.
  • Part 3: Live music experimentation from Third City.
  • Part 4: 'Algorave' Euleroom networked Algorithmic Dance Music with Sheffield Algorave pioneers Alex McLean, Lucy Cheeseman, and Claude Heiland-Allen. Live audio coding music beamed in from different locations for the first time in Preston. 
  • Part 5: Music, Dance, and Fayaaaa. A music and dance/sound and vision extravaganza with very special guest artist performances from Dems De La Paix and Yano Mzee.

Women in Music Conference - Thursday 19 May

  • Time: 2pm - 4.30pm
  • Location: UCLan Media Factory (Creative Innovation Zone, 4th Floor)

An inclusive conference that considers gender issues in the music industry. Accomplished women are brought together to discuss key topics, share experiences, and inspire future music people. There is no age limit to this event, though anyone aged under 16 should be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Beginners Guide to Running Music Events - Monday 23 May

  • Time: 6pm - 8pm
  • Location: UCLan Media Factory (Room ME216)

Have you ever thought about putting on your own event but don't know where to start? It's time to make ideas reality. Come and find out how you can do this in this, inclusive, relaxed, informal workshop with Tony Rigg.

Beginners Guide to Music Making on Mobile Devices (Smart Phones and Tablets) - Tuesday 24 May

  • Time: 2pm - 5pm
  • Location: UCLan Media Factory

Did you know anyone with a mobile device can use it to make music? In this inclusive, relaxed, informal workshop, celebrated musician Aziz Ibrahim will help you get started and show you some tips and tricks including some of the best free apps, and how to make and perform music on a budget.

You can sit, watch and listen, or bring a mobile device with you. There will be an open network to log on to but ideally you will have your own data if you would like to download some free apps quicker.

Open Mic Take Over: Mixtape Jam - Tuesday 24 May

  • Time: 8pm - 10pm
  • Location: The Ferret

Featuring DJ Johnny Jay and Aziz Ibrahim (Stone Roses, Ian Brown, Simply Red, Paul Weller, Asia). Johnny Jay is a digital media DJ/ producer and label owner committed to inclusivity and diversity in the arts. Aziz Ibrahim is a highly accomplished, respected and world-renowned musician with an impressive back-story that has seen him working across the musical spectrum.

Graham Massey's Toolshed - Thursday 26 May

  • Time: 7.30pm - 9pm
  • Location: The MET

Graham Massey's Toolshed Project has been running for 24 years. Taking electronic music as a starting point and handing it over to a rotating cast of great improvisors, the film documents the band coming out of lockdown, introducing a new collaboration with Shunya and talking about the ever evolving North West music scene whilst looking back ...

Jazzin' the Park - Saturday 28 May

This free event is suitable for all the family. Watch some of the stars of Jazz and Nu-Jazz flavas outside in the beautiful Winckley Square Gardens.
