Summer Saturdays 2022

Summer Saturdays return to Preston for 2022, making sure you always have something fun to fill your Saturdays with. Events take place throughout the summer on Preston Flag Market, with some larger-scale events also taking place in Avenham Park and at The MET

Make sure to save the dates to get your summer off to a sizzling start.

25 June - Armed Forces Day

  • Location: Preston Markets
  • Time: 10.45am 
  • Price: Free

Celebrate the city's serving soldiers, their families, and Preston's connection with the armed forces.

From 10.50am at the Cenotaph, Veterans, their families and friends will be in position. Standards march on, signalled by Bill Barlow playing the pipes, followed by a short service, readings and an address from our president, Colonel Waters. Standard Bearers will march off at the end of the service. 

25 June - Comedy at the MET

  • Location: The MET
  • Time: 7pm - 9.30pm

Join Eleanor Tiernan and Pierre Novellie as they bring a bit of merriment to the MET.

2 July - Brilliant Books Day: Meet Characters from Alice in Wonderland

As part of Brilliant Books Day, Magic Light Productions brings some of Lewis Carrol's iconic characters to Preston. Will you meet the The White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter or The Queen of Hearts? Come dressed as your favourite character and have your photo taken!

9 July - Makers Market

  • Time: 10am - 4pm
  • Price: Free

Pick up delicious local goodies, ranging from decadent cakes and handmade breads to an array of cheeses and locally distilled Gins. As well as a mouth-watering assortment of foods, the Makers Market also hosts unique crafters of all varieties, making it the perfect place to pick up a treat for yourself or gifts for loved ones.

Can't make this event? Don't worry, the Makers Market will also be on Preston Flag Market on Saturday 11 June and 13 August. 

16 July - Commonwealth Games Baton Relay

  • Location: Flag Market
  • Time: 1.48pm - 4pm
  • Price: Free

On Saturday 16 July, Preston will officially welcome the Baton. A busy schedule of activities and events are planned for the Queen's Baton Relay, with opportunities to highlight untold stories from Batonbearers who are striving for change in their community.

During its time in Preston, the Queen's Baton Relay will visit The Continental and travel through Avenham & Miller Parks, across Winckley Square, into Fishergate, visit Preston Markets and end at the Flag Market.

  • 1.48pm: The Baton will be arriving at Avenham Park, then travel to the Flag Market
  • 2.45pm: Departs from the Flag Market
  • 2pm - 4pm: Sporting activities on Flag Market

23 July - Making a Mark: Immaterial World

  • Location: Flag Market
  • Time: 12pm - 4pm
  • Price: Free

Let's get green and sustainable with a day of fun, creative activities. Join in a 'graffiti jam' where you can draw on the Flag Market floor with chalk, Life Drawing with a life model (clothed), and a 'poetry jam' or 'painting jam' led by local artists. 

'Bring A Bottle' to shaker making then join in the parade around Preston with Worldwise Samba Drummers. Enjoy crafts tables with items to buy and activities to try. This day is about recycling/up-cycling materials so please bring a clean plastic bottle to make your shaker!

30 July - The Whale 'Plastic Ocean'

  • Location: Flag Market

Bold explorers squeeze into the belly of an enormous inflatable Sperm Whale where they find themselves in the depths of the bubbling, kelp-swirling ocean. They encounter an aquabatic Diver who leads them swimmingly through the age-old journey of the life of an ancient Leatherback Turtle. With the use of exquisite puppets, comedy and music, Circo Rum Ba Ba explore the tale of sea creatures and their battle to survive in an ocean full of rubbish. The audience help to save the Turtle and the Whale from a deluge of plastic and travel from the Indian Ocean to a coral reef, leaving feeling empowered that everyone can make a difference.

6 August - LPM Dance Festival

20 August - Circus Skills

Polish your juggling and clown skills with a Splatt's Circus skills teacher. Why not come along in your best circus costume and learn some new skills.

27 August - Harris in the City

  • Location: Flag Market
  • Time: 12pm - 4pm

Join The Harris for a very special fashion event - showcasing fabulous frocks from Horrockses X Joanie.

Many of these new designs are inspired by original Horrockses Fashions dresses from the 1940s and 1950s, dresses which are in the Harris Museum collection. The Harris is lucky to care for the most extensive Horrockses Fashions collection in the UK. As they continue to tell the story of the Horrockses brand in the 21st century - they are delighted that after this event five of the Joanie dresses will enter the museum's collection to be preserved for the future.

24 September - Preston Pride

The annual Preston Pride will be back for 2022 on the Flag Market. Everyone is welcome as the city celebrates Preston's LGBTQ+ communities with live music, appearances, and a variety of information stands and stalls.
