Absorb a spot of local history...

If you're heading South of Preston, to nearby Leyland, then why not stop by to savour the South Ribble Museum. Housed in the town’s wonderfully quirky and historically appealing old grammar school, founded by Sir Henry Farington back in 1524, this hidden gem makes an interesting visit if you fancy an historical day out.

South Ribble through the centuries

If the museum amounts to six centuries of history, the collections within stretch that premise even further. Inside you'll find topics ranging from 20th century industry to the area’s architecture and landscape, as well as its cultural, civic and social history. From the Ffarington family of Worden to King Cotton himself, history unfolds within. There's even exhibitions and talks hosted by the museum throughout the year.

Varied activities programme

The South Ribble Museum has a busy programme of exhibitions, with activities most Saturday mornings, plus craft activities for youngsters and art workshops for adults. Add to that the regular workshops and demonstrations in watercolour painting, embroidery, clock making, origami and photography.

All these events are free of charge and open to all.
