Ribble Steam Railway

Ribble Steam Railway steam train operating on tracks around Preston Docks.

Hop aboard a steam train and discover the history of Preston's docks and railway...

With Ribble Steam Railway's fascinating working and static exhibits, the museum is a proud reminder of what makes Preston and Lancashire the vibrant centres they are today.

A day out with a difference

Found in the heart of Preston’s historic docklands, the museum makes an exciting day out and provides a full sensory experience of a working railway, stimulating and invigorating the senses.

Whether you’re a keen steam enthusiast or just looking for somewhere interesting to visit with the family, you’re guaranteed a memorable experience amid Lancashire’s world famous industrial heritage.

Discover the history of Preston‘s docks and the stories of the first electrical trains, then hop aboard a steam train and travel the railway’s 1 ¼  mile dock and riverside line. Uncover a hidden part of the city as the line passes Preston Marina and ventures over its impressive swing bridge. There’s also a miniature railway, especially for children, situated amongst the museum’s restored engines.

Make sure you don’t miss out on the opportunity to view industrial engines and locomotives being restored in the workshop and then relax with a snack in the museum’s café overlooking the locomotives.

Special steam weekends

Ribble Steam Railway opens its doors on selected weekends and days during the school holidays. They host special steam weekends, often with visiting trains, not forgetting the popular Santa Specials in December.
