Grange Park became Prestons First Green Flag Park during 2002-03. The Green Flag Award was given to the park in recognition for the high standards of maintenance, community involvement and overall management of the Park.
The history of Grange Park: Grange Park was developed from the grounds of Ribbleton Hall, a Victorian manor house built in 1865 for Thomas Birchall, a local solicitor and one time mayor of Preston.
Excavation of the original foundations has allowed the re-creation of the layout of the Hall and conservatory, as well as the adjacent kitchen garden.
After Birchall’s death the Hall had various occupants, including a boy’s preparatory school in the 1920’s and the A.T.S and U.S troops during World War II.
The creation of the formal Park began in 1955, after the Hall’s demolition. Under the supervision of Jack Billington, it soon boasted a bowling green with pavilion, tennis courts and magnificent rose beds, as well as many of the original trees and shrubs.
Like many Urban Parks, Grange Park fell into decline during the 1980’s. Vandalism, fly tipping and general neglect led to virtual abandonment by bowling teams and local residents.
Responding to representations from local Community Groups in the late 1980’s Preston City Council made a successful bid for Heritage Lottery grant aid and work began in September 1999 to restore the Park to its former glory.
Grange Park Facilities: Visitors to Grange Park can now imagine the grandeur of the Hall as it was in Birchall’s day and see the well, grotto and newly excavated ha-ha. They can also enjoy the play area and sculpture, the rose garden and the superb mature trees, and use the facilities of the modern, purpose built interpretative centre.
Grange Park Ranger: Grange Park has its own dedicated Park Ranger who carries out daily patrols and inspections of the Park to ensure that the park is clean tidy and safe. In addition the Ranger organises numerous Environmental and Historical Education Events for Schools and Community Groups.
Friends of Grange Park: Established for over 5 years the Friends of Grange Park work in partnership with the Park Ranger and the Councils Parks Development Team. The group plays a major role in assisting to organise community events, fund raising and also help to make management decisions about the Park. Further details of the group can be obtained by contacting the Ranger on 01772 703408.
