Cycling in Preston

Cycling is an excellent way to keep fit as well as being a cheap quick and convenient means of transport.

Boy cycling in Preston A leisurely cycle ride through Preston's magnificent victorian parks or along the canalside can help you discover a greener, more serene Preston. There are numourous routes and trails to follow, many of them outlined in the downloadable leaflets, designed for exploring the countryside and waterways of Preston and the surrounding area.

Old Tramway Cycle Route - Using traffic free cycle paths, travel from Preston to Bamber Bridge and Lostock Hall. Follow the old railway line through Preston Nature Reserve and admire the birds.

North Lancashire Bridleway - Stretching for 45km the bridleway runs through some of the most breathtaking scenery in the country, taking in the verdant, fertile lands of the Lune Valley and then traversing the Bowland Fells. Car parks along or near the route allow easy access.

Amounderness Cycleway - For a relaxing route with spectacular views, try the Preston-Lytham St Annes-Blackpool (South) cycle route. Travel out of Preston along the canal towpath, via country lanes to Kirkham and Lytham St Annes, and along the promenade to Blackpool's South Pier.

Canal Cycle Route 62 Preston - Using the canal towpath, traffic free paths and quite roads, the Canal Cycle Route links Cottom and Ingol with the City Centre and University.

The Preston Guild Wheel
This is a proposed circular cycling and walking route round the city to celebrate the 2012 Guild Wheel. It will improve cycling and walking access to the river and countryside and could also be used by people cycling to work or school. The key sections to complete are at Lea Gate, where it is proposed to use an existing farm occupation bridge to get over the A583 to the Ribble Link canal, and at Brockholes, where it is hoped to open a route through the proposed nature reserve to link the cycle path alongside the River Ribble with Longridge Road.

Remember the Cycle Code of Conduct:

  • Slow down when approaching pedestrians.
  • Ring your bell to let them know that you are there.
  • Give way to pedestrians, pass them slowly and give them plenty of room. Stop if necessary.
  • Be polite - a 'hello' and 'thankyou' means a lot.
  • On canals slow down at bridges where visibility is limited.
  • Ride at a gentle pace on promenades and canal towpaths.
  • Remember many people are hard of hearing or visually impaired. Do not assume that they can see or hear you.
  • Give way to people in wheelchairs.
