Copland Suite from Billy the Kid
Gershwin Piano Concerto in F
Korngold Suite from Much Ado about Nothing
Richard Strauss Suite from Der Rosenkavalier
Few tales of America’s Wild West thrill as reliably as that of Billy the Kid, outlawed for killing his mother’s murderer. Even fewer, though, are the composers who could have translated to the world of music the emptiness and intoxicating moral twilight characteristic of Billy’s world.
Nonetheless, composer Aaron Copland captures the empty rustling of the friendless desert to matchless perfection in his ballet score, echoing its hero’s fateful sense of honour and making atmospheric use of traditional melodies from the prairies.
The quintessential New World flavour of Copland is duplicated in Gershwin’s bluesy Piano Concerto, and echoed in Korngold’s lavish incidental music to Shakespeare’s play. But Korngold, for all his fame as one of Hollywood’s great film composers, was an émigré from Old World Vienna, and from the society and style represented in Richard Strauss’ luscious suite from Der Rosenkavalier.
‘A crisp, emotionally radiant performance that combined dexterity and sensitivity in equal measure. Goodyear’s delivery of this music was breathtaking.’ San Francisco Chronicle
