Preston Bus Station Refurbishment
Lancashire County Council approved plans for a £23m refurbishment of Preston's iconic bus station in late 2014...
The bus station has seen the creation of a modern and vibrant public service hub, bus and coach transport, and an attractive open public space, while at the same time preserving the building's unique brutalist architecture.
Improvements to the city's bus station play a key role in enabling the wider regeneration and development of Preston City Centre, supporting the Preston, South Ribble and Lancashire City Deal.
New bus station, coach park and multi-storey car park
A new 33 bay bus station has been created with a 4 bay coach park. The smaller bus and coach facilities accommodate approximately half of the inside of the ground floor. The multi-storey car park above the bus station has been repaired and preserved to extend the life of the building for another 25 years.
A more attractive public space
The remaining space on the Tithebarn Street side of the city's bus station is being developed into an open public area - Bus Station Square linking to Fishergate.
Improved safety and access
A key objective of the project was to make it easier and safer for people to access the bus station at ground floor level. This area of public space will link into Tithebarn Street, providing easier access for pedestrians visiting Preston city centre.
There will also be opportunity to review the three subway access points to the city subject to further discussion with St John's Shopping Centre and Preston Guild Hall.
International competition to develop designs
Lancashire County Council launched an international architectural competition to develop designs for a public space on the site of Preston Bus Station. The competition ran by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) on behalf of the county council saw entries shortlisted with the people of Preston voting for their favourite design.
The winning entry, with a total of 4215 votes, was New York based firm John Puttick Associates.
