Cannon Street Refurbishment

Cannon Street looking down from Fishergate, Preston

Winter of 2017 saw the completion of a renaissance for Cannon Street...

With the replacement of a tired old tarmac roadway and concrete slab pavement in favour of natural stone blocks, the improvements also made a clear link between the main shopping high street, Fishergate (which has also seen investment in public realm in recent years) and Cannon Street, helping to draw people down off the main street.

Cannon Street is home to a veritable selection of quirky independent shops including hairdressers, beauty parlours, clothing retailers, cafes and bar. The latter of whom are now able to spill out onto the street, making the most of shared space and improved environment.

Café owners and their customers have given very positive feedback to the new layout which feels much more spacious and appears brighter as they sit al fresco sipping a cappuccino and enjoying lunch or afternoon treat.

The street works were funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of the Winckley Square Townscape Heritage Initiative with further works to improve shop fronts being proposed.
