Nik Turner's New Space Ritual

A true journey into the heart of psychedelic rock with one of its undisputed pioneers...

Nik Turner, co-founder of legendary space rock pioneers Hawkwind, comes to The Continental with his ‘New Space Ritual’ band.

Vocalist and sax player Turner played a prominent part in all of the cult psychedelic band’s ‘classic era’ (70-75) recordings, either writing or co-writing famous fan-favourite tracks like ‘Master of the Universe’ and ‘Brainstorm’. A dispute with the other Hawkwind members led to his leaving in 1975. A trip to Egypt soon after saw him allowed the use of the Great Pyramid of Giza to record flute parts that would form the basis of classic album ‘Xitintoday’, recorded under the band name of ‘ik Turner’s Sphinx.

Subsequent years saw a single with lead vocals by Sting, guest appearances on LPs by Mother Gong, Sham 69, and Hawkwind bandmate Robert Calvert, and the assembling of art-rock/post-punk combo Inner City Unit (ICU) at the dawn of the eighties. ICU imploded five albums in, and the eighties saw Nik return to Hawkwind for a two year stint before being sacked again while preparing material for ‘The Chronicles of the Black Sword’ LP. However, being thought to represent the ‘true spirit’ of Hawkwind in a more authentic way than later incarnations of the band ever could, Turner found himself continually in demand by fans, leading eventually to the formation of Space Ritual, featuring other former members of Hawkwind, a band which he’s kept running to this day.

2013 saw him release the solo LP Space Gypsy, from which his other current combo (featuring ICU/Space Ritual alumni) takes its name, received enthusiastically by fans for its skilful recreation of the classic early seventies space rock sound. Live, the band plays material from the length and breadth of Turner’s career, encompassing his work with Hawkwind, Inner City Unit, Sphinx and Space Ritual, with a few surprises thrown in for good measure.
