The Unfurlings: Banners for Hope & Change exhibition.

Get your exhibition fix from home...

The Harris may be closed but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy their fantastic selection of exhibitions. Their online exhibitions take you on a virtual tour through their galleries so you don't miss a thing.

The Unfurlings: Banners for Hope & Change

This virtual exhibition at The Harris is the first unfurling of a banner created by people in Preston living with dementia.

Groups from across the UK have worked with artist Ian Beesley and poet Ian McMillan to create banners campaigning for a better understanding of this condition.

Based on traditional trade union and guild designs, there are 9 banners in total, covering subjects such as the need for better signage in public places, and the importance of active living and creativity for our wellbeing. Each banner is accompanied by a poem by McMillan.

The Preston banner has been designed by Preston’s Focus on Dementia Action group. This group help make sure people living with dementia are at the heart of the Alzheimer’s Society’s work. They have also worked with the Harris to co-curate this exhibition.

Their hope is that better understanding leads to action in making life better for everyone affected by dementia, whether personally or in our families and friendships.

The Artful Line

This exhibition is a selection of works from the Harris and The Courtauld Gallery that examine drawing in all its forms.

A drawing can be a first thought rapidly sketched, a complex work made in preparation for a finished composition, or an independent artwork. It can also be a record of how we see the world, or a visualisation of the artist’s imagination.

Featuring works from the 17th century to the present day, the exhibition includes drawings by Angelica Kauffman, William Blake, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Frank Auerbach and Deanna Petherbridge. Each drawing offers a unique insight into the mind of the artist and the process of making art.

The exhibition is part of an ongoing project with The Courtauld Gallery that celebrates our shared heritage with Courtaulds textiles. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the closure of the factory in Preston.

Taken in a few seconds /// By the reflection of light

This is a solo exhibition by Abigail Reynolds presenting some of the oldest artefacts in the Harris' collection.

Abigail Reynolds lives in St Just, Cornwall, and has a studio at Porthmeor in St Ives. Her work is closely linked to books and libraries.

Her new work for the Harris displays rare books and the oldest photograph from the Harris collection, pictured above, alongside a moving image work giving voices to these objects and exploring the secret places of the Harris.

Abigail’s work offers a unique opportunity to experience objects from the Harris collection that have never been on display before.
