2020 welcomes the year of the Rat...

Celebrate Chinese New Year, the year of the Rat, around Preston city centre. The first of all zodiac animals, Rats are clever, quick thinkers; successful but content with living a quiet and peaceful life.

This Chinese New Year officially begins on Saturday 25 January, lasting until Tuesday 4 February.

Chinese New Year events

Sample some Chinese culture by dropping in at one of these fantastic free events in Preston.

Chinese cultural event - The HarrisChinese lanterns and New Year decorations outside the Harris Museum.

  • Time: 11am - 3.30pm

Celebrate Chinese New Year at UCLan's CI Chinese Cultural Event. This exciting event welcomes you to sample traditional Chinese culture, get stuck into some games, and create your own works of art.

The event will include:

  • Paper cutting and paper making
  • Tea taster
  • Chinese calligraphy and painting
  • Language taster
  • Traditional Chinese games
  • Tai Chi and Tai Chi Fan
  • Lion dancing
  • Chinese song and dance

Guizhou Song and Dance Troupe - UCLan Media Factory

  • Date: Wednesday 22 January
  • Time: 6.30pm - 8pm

This song and dance troupe are the largest troupe in the Guizhou province and one of the most influential in south east China. Having performed all over the world, the Guizhou Song and Dance Troupe combine unique folk customs of Guizhou with different artistic styles.

Chinese workshops and exhibition - Lancashire Record Office

  • Date: Wednesday 29 January
  • Time: 3pm - 5.30pm

Celebrate the start of the Chinese Year of the Rat by taking part in a drop-in workshop. There will be workshops on Chinese calligraphy and knots and an exhibition of archives, including a letter from Elizabeth I to the Emperor of China. There will also be talks from Xin Liu of the School of Language and Global Studies and Victoria McCann.
