The summer holidays have arrived and Preston has an abundance of family-friendly things to do. Whatever their age or interests, there's something to keep all kinds of kids busy and entertained over the holidays.

On top of a fantastic selection of events to choose from, why not also soak up some sun at one of Preston's outdoor attractions. And, for those less-sunny days, make sure to check out our activities directory for some inspiration.

Fearsome Craftsmen - Harris Museum

Saturday 15 June - Monday 26 August

Make sure not to miss the Fearsome Craftsmen exhibition, taking place at the Harris throughout the summer holidays. This informative exhibition is packed with all things Viking. Explore interactive displays, marvel at the Silverdale Hoard, and dress-up in Viking helmets and clothing. This exhibition is a must-visit for all ages.

Xplorer Challenge - Brockholes Nature Reserve

Saturday 20 July - Sunday 1 September, 10am - 4pm

Take on the Xplorer challenge as a family and head on an adventure around Brockholes Nature Reserve to find the themed markers. The perfect way to get the kids outdoors, the Xplorer challenge is on throughout the summer holidays and doesn't require any booking.

The Lancashire Festival - Avenham & Miller Parks

Saturday 20 July, 12pm - 7pm

Kick-start the summer holidays with The Lancashire Festival. The day will be packed with plenty family fun. Expect live music, children's entertainers, street food, circus acts, workshops, and stalls. Tickets are available in advance or on the gate.

Treasure Island Outdoor Performance - Hoghton Tower

Sunday 21 July, 2.30pm - 4.30pm

Make the most of your summer by catching this outdoor performance of Treasure Island. Pack a picnic, settle down, and follow Jim Hawkins on his swashbuckling adventure.

Family Games Session - Harris Library

Wednesday 24 July, 2pm - 4pm

Gather the family and play some of your favourite classic games...In giant form! This free session includes Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, and more. The event is free to attend and no booking is required; Just show up and enjoy.

Family Fun Day for North West Air Ambulance - Preston Grasshoppers

Sunday 28 July, 11am - 5pm

Don't miss this family day out in aid of North West Air Ambulance, with all kinds of things to do and see. Expect stalls, a raffle, a tombola, kid's fun fair, carnival games, and workshops and activities for kids. Entry is free to this event.

Kids Clay Lamp Making - Harris Museum

Monday 29 July, 11am - 12pm and 1pm - 2pm

As part of the Fearsome Craftsmen exhibition, create your very own Viking-style clay lamp in this hands-on workshop. Once you've created your masterpiece you can even take it home with you. The workshop runs in two separate sessions and booking is essential. Suitable for ages five and over.

Alien Invasion - Flag Market and Preston Markets

Saturday 3 August, 12pm - 4pm

Strange visitors are coming to Preston's Flag Market and Market Hall, bringing along an Oracle who can bestow the wisdom of the universe. Don't miss this creative and unique performance by Preston Youth Theatre on the Flag Market at 12.30pm and 2.30pm. There will also be family workshops throughout the day. With plenty things to do and see, be so be sure to drop by!

Moor Park Get Together - Moor Park

Sunday 4 August, 12pm - 3pm

Enjoy an afternoon on Moor Park where an array of activities await. There will be face painting, circus skills, arts and crafts, and sports activities. Entry and registration for this event is free on the day or free fast track tickets are available online.

Bug Box Making - Ashton Park

Sunday 4 August, 1pm - 3pm

Create your own bug box to help the smaller creatures living in Ashton Park. You also have the chance to take your bug box home with you for a small charge of £2.50. To get creating just meet at the bowling greens on Ashton Park between 1pm-3pm.

Junior Ranger for the Morning - Fishwick Local Nature Reserve

Tuesday 6 August, 10am - 12pm

Join the Fishwick Park Ranger between 10am-12pm for a woodland wander and experience what it's like to look after the nature reserve. There will also be the opportunity to make a bird box and lend a hand litter picking. No booking is needed for this free event, just meet on the Fishwick Local Nature Reserve car park at 10am. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Dragonfly Walk - Haslam Park

Thursday 8 August, 1pm-3pm

Join this free guided walk and get hunting for Damselflies and Dragonflies. The walk will be led by the Park Ranger and members of the Friends of Haslam Park. To take part just meet at the Bowls Pavilion at 1pm. Make sure to bring your wellies just in case!

Make a Viking Longboat - Harris Museum

Friday 9 August, 11am - 12pm and 2pm - 3pm

Join this exciting workshop where you can create your very own mini Viking longboat. Suitable for ages five and over, there are two times to choose from and booking is essential. Whilst there, make sure to check out the Fearsome Craftsmen exhibition, taking place throughout the summer holidays.

Nalbinding Workshop - Harris Museum

Saturday 10 August, 11am - 12pm and 1pm - 2pm

Learn the ancient craft of Nalbinding, as part of the Fearsome Craftsmen exhibition at the Harris. This beginner's workshop has two times to choose from on the day, with booking essential. Suitable for ages seven and over.

Make a Viking Coin and Pouch - Harris Museum

Tuesday 13 August, 11am - 12pm and 1pm - 2pm

Get creative over the summer holidays and create your own Viking coin and pouch to take home with you. This hands-on workshop is inspired by the Fearsome Craftsmen exhibition. There are two times to choose from on the day, with booking essential. Suitable for ages five and over.

Dragons, Damsels and Other Beasties - Fishwick Local Nature Reserve

Thursday 15 August, 1pm - 3pm

Dragonfly.

See what fascinating creatures you can discover in and around the water at Fishwick Local Nature Reserve. This summer pond dipping session will be led by the Park Ranger and volunteers. The event is free and children must be accompanied by an adult. No booking is required, just meet at the Fishwick Local Nature Reserve car park at 1pm to take part.

Celtic Heart Knot Necklace Workshop - Harris Museum

Friday 16 August, 2pm - 3.30pm

Create your very own Celtic heart knot necklace or bracelet to take home with you. Booking is essential and the suggested age for this event is ten years and over. This hands-on workshop is inspired by the Fearsome Craftsmen exhibition, taking place at the Harris throughout the summer holidays.

Gangsta Granny Outdoor Theatre - Brockholes Nature Reserve

Saturday 17 August, 4pm - 7pm

Experience the ever-popular kid's best seller 'Gangsta Granny' by David Walliams in outdoor theatre form. Bring along a tasty picnic and settle down for some outdoor family entertainment, surrounded by Brockholes' scenic nature reserve.

Reptile Encounter - Brockholes Nature Reserve

Sunday 18 August, 12pm - 3pm

Get up close and personal with a variety of reptiles this summer. Whether you're looking to overcome your fears or would like to learn about these fascinating creatures, just drop into this free meet and greet session. You will find this session taking place in the Activity Room on Brockholes' floating Visitor Village. Children must be supervised by an adult.

Meadows and Mini-Beasts - Fishwick Local Nature Reserve

Monday 19 August, 1pm - 3pm

Take a close-up look at the variety of creepy-crawlies living amongst the colourful wildflowers in Cowslip Meadow. This adventure is suitable for children aged 5-11 when accompanied by an adult. The session is free and no booking is needed. To take part just meet at the Fishwick Local Nature Reserve car park at 1pm.

Viking Felting: Mitten Making - Harris Museum

Tuesday 20 August, 11am - 12.30pm

Learn the technique of wet felting and create your own pair of cosy mittens. This beginner's workshop is suitable for ages seven and over and booking is essential. Whilst you're there be sure to check out the Fearsome Craftsmen exhibition, taking place throughout the summer holidays.

Friendly Engines - Ribble Steam Railway

Saturday 24 August - Monday 26 August, 10.30am - 5pm

There's plenty family fun to be had during the August bank holiday at Ribble Steam Railway. On top of unlimited train rides and access to their museum and playground there will also be face painting and balloon animals.
